Across the centuries, representations of Joan of Arc have undergone numerous revisions. It was not until the early 19th century that the political potential of Joan’s image began to be realized. Since then it has been evoked to help promote programs and values from both extremes of the political spectrum, culminating today in her adoption by the Front National. These shifting images of Joan are explored by John E. Flower, Professor of French at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK.
