Please join us for an event organized jointly between French, Italian & Art History programs to screen & discuss the film “Io Capitano,” directed by Matteo Garrone.
The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film’s themes & representation of migration.
Synopsis: “Io Capitano,” Directed by Matteo Garrone & released in 2023, is the epic story of a teenage boy who, together with his cousin, decides to leave Dakar in Senegal & make his way to Europe ( Italy ). A contemporary Odyssey in which the protagonist must overcome a series of obstacles & in the process is transformed from a human, to a commodity, to an animal, finally becoming a hero. Passing through Niger, Libya & grand adventures through the dangers of the desert & the sea, the ambiguities & contradictions of human beings, in which dreams, hopes & the ambitions of the main characters turn into a struggle for survival, where there is no space for piety.
