Winthrop-King Summer Doctoral Fellowship

PhD students in the French doctoral program at Florida State University have the opportunity to apply for a fellowship for the amount of $5,000. The purpose of the award is to allow students with regular teaching assistant appointments in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics to dedicate summer to research. No teaching or other formal duties may be undertaken during the award period. Awardees must undertake the Fellowship in the first summer following their preliminary exams.

This fellowship is not repeatable.

The application must be submitted by the first week of Spring semester of the second year of the PhD program through the link that is at the bottom of the page. The application consists of:

  • A two-page description of the work to be undertaken for the duration of the Fellowship.
  •  A current CV.
  • A one-page letter of support from the applicant’s dissertation director.

To be eligible to receive the fellowship, awardees must be:

  • Enrolled in nine (9) credit-hours if they are out-of-state or international students, or twelve (12) credit-hours if they are in-state students, i.e. applicants must be full time students and have a regular teaching assistant appointment in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Must plan to use the award in the first summer following the applicant’s preliminary exams.

Final award decisions will be made by the W-K Institute director by the end of the Spring semester.

Awards are made for future research in the semester specified in the application; they may not be made for current or past semesters nor for the semester in which applicant is intending to graduate. Awards are made for the specified semester and may not be deferred until a later date. Successful applicants who are unable to show proof of progress in their dissertation for which they are awarded funds must repay the award to the FSU Foundation in the following semester.

Under FSU and federal regulations, funds cannot be disbursed to recipients before the week after Drop-Add in the semester for which the scholarship is awarded.

Awards cannot be used in concurrence with other awards or travel grants from the Winthrop-King Institute.

For recipients who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who have completed all the necessary formalities by the due dates, will have the awards available to them by by FSU Student Financial Services the week after the Drop-Add period in the semester of the award after deduction of any balances owed by the student to the University.

Recipients who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents will receive their awards up to two weeks after Drop-Add period in the semester of the award after deduction of any balances owed by the student to the University and after withholding up to 14% in taxes.
