High School Summer Travel Award in French

The purpose of the Ada Belle Winthrop-King High School Summer Travel Award in French is to provide an opportunity for high school students in Leon County who plan to travel to a French-speaking country or region to study French and improve their cultural knowledge in the summer of the year the application is made. The scholarship helps cover the costs of travel and lodging to and from the country. The scholarship is repeatable.

The award is valued at $2,000 and four scholarships will be offered each year.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a high school student, grades 9 to 12, enrolled in the Leon County School District
  • Be presently taking a French class
  • Have earned a grade of an A or B in each previous French course taken at the high school level

Includes AP and Dual Enrollment classes.

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the recommendation letter from their French teacher and upload it.

General Terms and Conditions Governing Winthrop-King Awards

All required application materials must be completed, verified, and submitted electronically by the announced Winthrop-King application deadline. It may be necessary to invest time in preparing your application. It is recommended you begin the application’s preparation well before the deadline to guarantee you can submit a complete application on time.

A late or incomplete application will not be considered by the High School Award committee.

You may save your data and return to it before submitting the completed application; however, you must press “Submit” before the deadline for your application to be considered.

Be sure to comply with the instructions to be eligible for the travel award.

Award Conditions

  • All Winthrop-King awards are subject to the availability of funds and must remain in compliance with university guidance regarding funded travel.
  • Awards are made for future study in a specified summer and may not be changed or deferred.
  • Awards cannot be used after graduation.
  • Award recipients who are unable to complete the travel must repay the award within seven days of the intended travel’s commencement.
  • Upon completion of travel, the award recipient must submit all "proofs of travels," including receipts, boarding passes, etc…, to the Winthrop-King Institute for reimbursement.
    • An FSU Guest Traveler Profile Form must be completed, and uploaded for all reimbursement requests.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the necessary application information is "legible."
  • The recommendation letter from your French teacher in which they verify your French class grades, and your language oriented travel, must be requested for inclusion by the applicant.
    • The students must have communicated, and started coordinating the travel to a French speaking country with their French teacher before applying for the grant as the Travel program’s approval by the French teacher will be verified.
    • An incomplete application is ineligible.
  • Grants are offered at the discretion of the scholarship committee, taking into account all information provided on the application forms. The committee members’ decisions are final. If the committee so determines that no application is worthy of an award, the decision is final. The committee does not provide any additional feedback to candidates.

Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their applications by email, before or on Friday, April 24, 2026.

In view of a large number of applicants, the offer announcement process may take time, and it is unnecessary for candidates to be concerned if some applicants are contacted before others.

Reimbursement

The Winthrop-King Institute will only reimburse the travel expenses approved by the university. Review the university's Travel Reference Guide.

In order to be reimbursed for your travels, you must complete the FSU Guest Traveler Profile Form, have an approved travel request in SAP Concur before you travel, and for consideration, all receipts must be itemized.
